Though lacking the almost telepathic interplay later developed by frontmen Mark Olson and Gary Louris, the Jayhawks' self-titled debut — issued in a tiny pressing of just a few thousand copies — is a fair indication of the remarkable things still to come from the band. Complete with song titles which could have been cribbed from old Replacements records — "Six Pack on the Dashboard," "The Liquor Store Came First," "I'm Not in Prison," and so forth — the record owes a clear debt to the group's Minneapolis stomping grounds, but evidence of the Jayhawks' own distinct identity can be found in the fluid guitar work as well as in Olson and Louris' harmonies, which even this early in the game are graceful and rich.
