Notes

NOTE:
Disk 1 contains a version as off-master which has no LB#. This taper was very close to the bass drum and it can be very annoying. It is probably for completist only. Disk 2 contain the version know as "First Sign of the Cross", which is LB-2294 and is the better of the two.

Thank you. All right. This song took ten years to live, ten years to write. Three people who were in love with each other all at the same time. (plays Tangled Up In Blue) Thank you. That was Alan Pasqua on the organ, Steve Douglas on the tenor sax.

In the Midwest in the 50’s they used to have carnivals come through all the time. There always used to be somebody called a geek. A geek is a man who eats a live chicken, bites the head off and eats that. Then he finds his way and eats the rest of it, sweeps all the feathers up with a broom. Anyhow, it cost a quarter to see him. If you think you’re funky this guy was low down, real low down. Anyhow, I never did get too tight with him, I don't think anybody really did. But I was talking to the bearded lady one day, you know, at breakfast and she said,"He's really special. This man has a problem.” She says, “He thinks everybody else is being very freaky.” Anyhow, I used to remember that as I traveled here and there in this world. (before Ballad Of A Thin Man)

Thank you. I was riding on a train one time from (.....), Mexico to San Diego. When the train got to Monterey (…..) with about twelve children and mother and father. This old man got on the train, he…I don’t know how old, he was a pretty old man. He was wearing a blanket, you know. Anyway, I figured as he got on the train (…..). It was dark outside, I was looking through the window, like a mirror, I saw him come and sit over at the other side of the aisle from me. So, I turned around and looked at him and both his eyes were on fire. And the smoke was coming out of his nostrils. Anyway, this old man, I just wanted to ask him everything, but I didn’t know where to begin. (before Señor (Tales Of Yankee Power))

Thank you. It so happens that my birthday falls on the high holy gypsy holiday. This is in Franc). Anyway, I wanted to see what the gypsies were up to (…..) and they have a party. A party for a week on my birthday in the south of France. I was fortunate enough to meet the king of the gypsies over there. I found it interesting that he had 16 wives and 120 children and he still wasn't faithful and true. Anyway, they knew it was my birthday so they let me party with them, I guess. And after a week of doing just about everything twice, it was time for me to go. Somebody asked me what I wanted to take on the road. I just said “one more cup of coffee” (…..). So they put it in a bag and I rode off to the valley below.

Thank you. Right. The first girl that ever broke my heart, I’m gonna sing (…..). She left me for an older man. I wanna dedicate this song to her and I wish her well. (before Girl From The North Country)

Thank you. That was All Along The Watchtower, that was David Mansfield on the smoking violin.

Thank you. (…..) guitar player. Mr. T-Bone Burnett. He's in the crowd tonight! Stand up (…..). Please stand up. He's not gonna stand up. Anyway, on the drums tonight, from the Bahamas, give him a warm hand, Ian Wallace. On the bass guitar, Jerry Scheff. On the keyboards, from Trinidad, Alan Pasqua. On the electric lead guitar, the oldest member of this group, born in 1568! Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Billy Cross On the mandolin, electric mandolin, electric violin, sometimes electric lead guitar, the baby of the group, 15 years old, he’s been with me now for five years. And you have to give him a hand for that. He doesn't smoke dope, drink whiskey, chase women. For that he's a pure musician. He's gonna start all those things tonight though. Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. David Mansfield. All right. On the rhythm guitar, doesn't speak a word of English, but he plays his heart out, doesn't he? From Bogota, Colombia, Mr. Steven Soles. On the tenor saxophone, a man who's a legend in his own time. He has played with them all. Duane Eddy. And many of Phil Spectors’ greatest records. Ladies and gentlemen, the phenomenal Steve Douglas. On the backup vocals tonight, three young ladies who break my heart every night. On the right, my ex-girlfriend and trusty confidant, Jo Ann Harris. In the middle, my current girlfriend, Helena Springs. And on the other side my fiancée Carolyn Dennis. All right. On the conga drums, from Detroit, the most amazing, she really is, Miss Bobbye Hall. All right, thank you for coming. I’m not readyto be put out to pasture yet, so we may be back. (before It’s Alright, Ma (I’m Only Bleeding))

Thank you. Thank you. All right, we’re gonna hit the road. I wanna close with this song, a song I wrote for one of my babies when he was a baby. He’s not a baby anymore, he’s not here, but I wanna play it anyway. (before Forever Young)
