As for the band, they seem a little nervous playing for the crowds after a lengthy hiatus, and what was then the " new album" material.
The Dublin show has it's share of problems as well.
The taper fiddles with their equipment, taping the mic, moving it around, and stopping and starting the tape several times.
Most likely the taper stopped recording to conserve tape, but really by doing it so many times, they've actually cut quite a lot of important audio material, ( a portion of the bands second ever performances of " Black Dog", " Going To California", and " Rock And Roll", not to mention the possible full acoustic set, and the rare performance of " C'mon Everybody".
Also, the taper ( or possibly a friend of the taper, or even just a member of the audience) is a little too over zealous during the bands performance, and their cheers, whistling, and even immitating guitar solos can really be quite grating on the listener, and does take the focus away from the actual music a bit.
So even though the recording suffers from these issues, it is indeed a brighter sounding recording then the Belfast tape, which is odd because this was taped from a balcony and usually a recording taped closer to the stage would sound superior then being taped from a balcony.
The band have seemed to have settled in and found their groove, playing longer versions of " Dazed And Confused", and " Whole Lotta Love" for the crowd, and they seem to be enjoying themselves, feeding off the energy of the audience.
As I stated, this recording was taped from a balcony, the tapers claim that one of their friends is " down there", meaning that they were seated in a balcony, not on the floor.
What makes this show so special and important is that this show features the bands second live performances of material from Led Zeppelin IV for an audience.
The band play staples of their setlist like " Black Dog", and " Stairway To Heaven" with real passion and intensity.
The band are in fine form for this show, and sound as if they're in better spirits then they were the previous night.
According to a review of posted by Keith Lambert on Underground Uprising for the EVSD release of the Belfast tape, Bonham was apparently in a bad mood during the show.
From the review:
"One audience member remembers seeing the rest of the band drinking beer at the side of stage during this number, heckling Bonham mercilessly. He beckoned to them, hoping that they would return to finish the song. Bonzo breaks his sticks during Moby Dick, perhaps he was venting some frustration at his colleagues!"
The band also seem to be in a creative mood, the addition of " C'mon Everybody" shows that they wanted to add and play something special for the crowd ( who have been incredibly responsive to the band).
It's possible that they could've added to the setlist " Gallows Pole", an audience member keeps yelling out a request for the song, and Plant responds " yeah eventually".
He could've just said that to appease the audience patron, but since the recording is so incomplete, who knows what could've happened that night.
Some highlights of the show are:
" Black Dog" ( Plant really tries to recreate the studio version)
" Stairway To Heaven" ( he messes up the lyrics slightly, but it's one of the earliest attempts of the song, so it's understandable)
" Whole Lotta Love"
" Communication Breakdown"
