CD ONE
Tracks 1 - 5 hail from the first Posies radio broadcast I could find. KBCS FM out of
Bellevue Community College in Bellevue, WA just across Lake Washington from Seattle. Just
Jon and Ken playing songs from their unreleased album Dear 23. Many of the demos from The
Milkcrate Sessions are also sourced from this broadcast. My copy came from a tape copy of
a tape recorded directly from the broadcast. Track 5 is the cover of the classic Hollies
song. It has a fade since the tape was cutoff about 2/3 of the way through the song.
KBCS Bellevue, September 1989
1. I May Hate You Sometimes
2. Compliment
3. Suddenly Mary
4. Any Other Way
5. King Midas In Reverse
Tracks 6 - 7 were performed on KUKQ radio in Tempe, AZ sometime in 1990 whilst on the Dear
23 tour. Once again, just Jon and Ken. My recording has an unknown history. I got it
from a Phoenix area Posies tape trader ten years ago. Sounds like maybe it was recorded
straight from the radio onto cassette.
KUKQ Tempe 1990
6. Suddenly Mary
7. Any Other Way
Tracks 8 - 11 were recorded as a special session for KISW FM in Seattle. These were not
performed live on the air but were recorded specifically for broadcast. This is a full-band
acoustic performance recorded direct to DAT. My copy comes from a cassette given to
drummer Mike Musburger from the pre-FM DAT. Track 11 is a cover of the Chris Bell classic.
KISW Seattle 3/13/91
8. My Big Mouth
9. Suddenly Mary
10. This One's Taken
11. I Am the Cosmos
Track 12 was performed at KJJO FM in Minneapolis. Again, Jon and Ken on this one but this
time Jon is playing an electric guitar. It is a cover of a Neil Young & Crazy Horse song.
Interestingly enough, a full-band studio recording exists of this song from the unreleased
Lost Sessions recordings. Some of those found their way onto the band's boxed set
released in 2000.
KJJO Minneapolis 6/15/91
12. When You Dance I Can Really Love
Track 13 was aired as a part of a Westwood One radio special chronicling the release of
The Basketball Diaries, the motion picture adapted from NYC poet/musician Jim Carroll's
memoirs. Jon and Ken were connected with Carroll via satellite link and interviewed each
other and Jon and Ken performed a couple of songs. "Coming Right Along" from the 2CD
compilation Modern Rock Live is sourced from this session. Track 13 is sourced from this
broadcast though never released. My copy is a copy of a copy of the broadcast.
Modern Rock Live, Westwood One Radio 1994
13. Precious Moments
Tracks 14 - 16 were taped for 120 Minutes, MTV's former late night alternative rock video
program. This recording is sourced from a cassette tape of the audio from a demonstration
VHS tape made for a friend of the band. Jon and Ken on acoustics with host Dave Kendall.
120 Minutes, MTV 7/27/93
14. Solar Sister (take one)
15. Solar Sister (take two)
16. Dream All Day
Track 17 was performed on WXMT FM in Chicago on the Frosting On the Beater tour. Again, Jon
and Ken on acoustics. I don't recall who i got this tape from but it sounds like a copy of
a copy of a copy.
WXMT Chicago 7/31/93
17. Earlier Than Expected
Tracks 18 - 19 were recorded for BBC Radio One. Jon and Ken on acoustics. This recording
is sourced from an FM aircheck tape made for BBC archives.
18. Dream All Day
19. Solar Sister
Track 20 was performed on Belgian radio in early 1994. Acoustic Jon and Ken yet again.
This tape is sourced from a copy of a copy of the broadcast.
20. Dream All Day
Tracks 21 - 22 were broadcast live on BBC Radio One from the Phoenix Festival in Stafford.
This is a full-band rock concert excerpted on the radio. This recording
is sourced from an FM aircheck tape made for BBC archives.
21. Golden Blunders
22. Dream All Day
CD TWO
Tracks 1 - 9: KDHX St. Louis, December 19, 1989
This is one of a few full-band radio broadcast performances I know of that were performed
specifically for broadcast and not just re-broadcast of concert performances. The mix is
high on drums and vocals (like most small club soundboards) but it's a very energetic
recording nonetheless. And very, very early. Dear 23 was a few months away from release at
that point. The tape was sourced from a former Seattle bandmate who had just moved from the
St. Louis area. His tape was a copy of a St. Louis bandmate's tape that was sourced from
the original broadcast. That said, there's noticeable wow and flutter at times. It's a
historic recording so I try to look past that sort of thing.
1. My Big Mouth
2. Suddenly Mary
3. Any Other Way
4. Apology
5. Paint Me
6. Help Yourself
7. I Am the Cosmos (Chris Bell cover)
8. Flood of Sunshine
9. Blind Eyes Open
Tracks 10 - 18: Whisky a Go Go, Los Angeles, August 16, 1993
This is a nice professional multi-track recording from the Whisky for an L.A. radio station.
My source is pre-FM from a clone of the master disc used for on-air use. Since it was set-
up for DJ upcuts I had to edit the disc. That sounds more drastic than it really is. I
only had to create track marks where none existed. Anyhow, this is about as good as it
gets sound-wise. Performance though I think is kinda rough. I've heard better performances
from that tour.
10. Definite Door
11. Solar Sister
12. Golden Blunders
13. Love Letter Boxes
14. Burn and Shine
15. When Mute Tongues Can Speak
16. Earlier Than Expected
17. Dream All Day
18. Any Other Way
CD THREE:
Tracks 1 - 11: 2 Meter Sessions, Amsterdam, November 1, 1993
This particular radio session was also filmed for use on television and radio in Amsterdam.
The film footage shows the band in the studios at a very unrockandroll 8AM in the morning.
Anyhow, they manage to get it together. My copy is sourced from a cassette copy rolled in
tandem with the multi-tracks as a reference tape for then-drummer Mike Musburger.
Completists will note the absence of two songs from this collection. "Dreaming" was
included on the band's boxed set released in 2000 and "Burn and Shine" was included on a
2CD compilation released of bands who participated in the 2 Meter Sessions. You'll also
note I've included the between-song doodling around on songs you may know.
1. Flavor of the Month
2. Any Other Way
3. I Am the Cosmos (Chris Bell cover)
4. Teenage Fanclub Jam
5. When Mute Tongues Can Speak
6. Elvis Costello Jam
7. Earlier Than Expected
8. Deep Purple Jam
9. Dream All Day
10. Dave Brubeck Jam
11. Coming Right Along
Tracks 12 - 18: 2 Meter Sessions, Amsterdam, April 13, 1996
The band comes back around for another appearance. This time with a different drummer and
bassist in tow. MY copy of this broadcast comes from a cassette copy of a cassette
recording of the original FM broadcast. There is a bit of wow-and-flutter and hiss but the
performance is pretty energetic and the clarity is very good.
12. Everybody Is a Fucking Liar
13. Throwaway
14. Please Return It
15. Ontario
16. Broken Record
17. World
18. Limitless Expressions
Track 19: Pukkelpop Festival, Hasselt 1998
This performance was excerpted from The Posies' appearance at Pukkelpop in 1998. My copy
came from a minidisc clone of the minidisc recording of the original broadcast.
19. Broken Record
CD FOUR
Tracks 1 - 3: Radio Paris, November 4, 1993
Another acoustic Jon and Ken performance. Something you'll note is missing is "Burn and
Shine" which appeared on the band's boxed set released in 2000. Something else you will
notice is that the pitch has been corrected on these three tracks. Jon wouldn't allow me
to fix the pitch on "Burn and Shine" for the box. It's kinda funny the first time but sped-
up tape just gets on my nerves so...I fixed it. My copy from a tape copy of a cassette
recording of the original broadcast. I don't know at which point the tape speed screwed up.
1. Any Other way
2. Flavor of the Month
3. Earlier Than Expected
Track 4: "The Word," U.K. TV 1994
The band play live television with their latest British single but are unable to play the
whole song due to time restraints, so that's why the band just kinda blow up in the last
verse of the song. And dig on the announcer getting the song title wrong! My copy is a
digital dub from a VHS copy of the original broadcast.
4. Distant Door
Tracks 5 - 19: Lee's Palace, Toronto, april 19, 1995
Excerpts of this show were broadcast on Canadian rock radio. My copy is from a cassette
dub of the original broadcast and sounds much better than I remembered it. The bass
guitar is pretty high in the mix but it's still quite enjoyable. Track 19 is sourced from
a different recording of the radio show, capturing the last song of the broadcast. There's
a significant difference in mix. Must've been recorded off a different station's broadcast.
Some stations use different compressions and such in their signal chain before broadcast.
It sounds like this station used something with a shitload of mids. Anyhow, this is a great
show highlighting material from Amazing Disgrace, still a year away from release at that
point.
5. Definite Door
6. Solar Sister
7. Dream All Day
8. Love Letter Boxes
9. Flavor of the Month
10. When Mute Tongues Can Speak
11. Fight It
12. Grant Hart
13. Throwaway
14. Any Other Way
15. Lights Out
16. Please Return It
17. Burn and Shine
18. Hate Song
19. How She Lied By Living
Tracks 20 - 21: DeBeurs Radio, Amsterdam, June 1998
The band plays an acoustic full-band session. My recording is a copy of a cassette copy.
You know the drill by now. It sounds like either the session was slightly overmodulated or
someone's cassette player was in the red so you've got some tape distortion. Not too bad
but noticeable.
20. Friendship of the Future
21. Start a Life
CD FIVE
Tracks 1 - 10: Swedish National Radio, April 22, 1996
Sounds like a club show recorded for later broadcast. The band had a ragged glory that
night. Ken says he's awfully sick during the show so that may be why. My recording is a
copy of a copy of a cassette recording of the original broadcast. Note that "Grant Hart"
from the band's boxed set hails from this recording.
1. Dream All Day
2. Throwaway
3. Love Letter Boxes
4. Golden Blunders
5. Precious Moments
6. Coming Right Along
7. Everybody Is a Fucking Liar
8. World
9. Flavor of the Month
10. Please Return It
Tracks 11 - 12: KMTT Seattle, May 13, 1995
Jon and Ken go acoustic on "The Mountain," Seattle's adult-alternative radio station. My
copy is sourced straight from the broadcast. Very clean.
11. Precious Moments
12. Fight It
Tracks 13 - 14: KNDD Seattle, May 13, 1995
Jon and Ken go acoustic on "The End," Seattle's commercial alternative station. On paper it
looks like they were running all over town that day (they did another station, KJR AM
sports, but I don't have that one) but all the radio stations were located in the same
building so it was very easy for them. Ken holds back from the swearing in "Ontario" but
then decides to just go with it. Live radio.
13. Please Return It
14. Ontario
Tracks 15 - 21: "Common Threads," G-Rock Princeton, August 24, 2000
This is a Sunday morning acoustic show on central New Jersey's alternative rock station.
This is sourced from the pre-FM master DAT and just sparkles. In front of a studio
audience too.
15. Lady Friend (Byrds cover)
16. You Avoid Parties
17. My Big Mouth
18. Saying Sorry To Myself
19. Going Going Gone
20. Dream All Day
21. Suddenly Mary
Track 22: XFM London, March 6, 2001
Jon & Ken live on British satellite radio. Recorded straight from the bird onto minidisc.
22. Matinee
CD SIX
Tracks 1 - 16: Black Sessions, Paris, March 1, 1994
Another great full band radio performance, this time before a rabid studio audience. The
audience eggs the band on towards an amazing performance with possibly the most passionate
performance of "Coming Right Along" I've heard. My copy comes from two separate sources.
I don't recall how I got them but they came to me on cassette and both sources appear to
have gone through plenty of analog dubs before making their way to me. The first tape
ended with track 11 but the second had the rest. From separate broadcasts of the same
session? I dunno. I share it with you here.

9. Any Other Way
10. Burn and Shine
11. How She Lied By Living
12. Coming Right Along
13. Lights Out
14. Wiggly World (Devo cover)
15. Song of the Baker (Small Faces cover)
16. Black Night (Deep Purple cover)
Tracks 17 - 20: CBC Radio, Vancouver 1996
This recording has been widely bootlegged among Radiohead fans as Jon and Ken shared the
studio that session with Thom Yorke. They shared a producer in common (John Leckie produced
both The Posies' "Dear 23" and Radiohead's "The Bends") and were friendly with eachother.
Anyhow, after the three friends monkeyed around with as Oasis song Jon Auer played drums
behind Thom on track 18. Then it's just Jon and Ken. My copy comes from a copy of a copy
of the broadcast.
17. Wonderwall
18. Blow Out
19. Ontario
20. Throwaway
CD SEVEN
Tracks 1 - 9: 99X FM, Atlanta, May 5th, 1996
Jon and Ken perform acoustic before a small studio audience. My copy is a tape of a tape
but it also sounds like there is a lossy compression in there somewhere. Sometimes FM gets
that swirly thing in the high end like bad MP3 or streaming. I didn't think any stations
were streaming in 1996. I certainly don't remember any but I could be wrong. Anyhow, nice
to see them play something other than from Frosting and Amazing Disgrace.

5. Solar Sister
6. Like Me Too
7. Flavor of the Month
8. Ontario
9. Everyone Moves Away
Tracks 10 - 18: Reading Festival, august 1996
Live on television. My copy is straight from a videotape given to Ken Stringfellow of the
broadcast by the BBC, hence the funny VCR tracking you hear at the very beginning.
