Notes

Johnny Winter at Toad's Place, New Haven, Connecticut - February 01, 1979

On 1978 and 1979 Johnny Winter presented his longest performances ever, at least two hours shows, usually about a 3 hours set. After longer blues renditions, ever quoting some other old classics and a pinch of rock'n'roll, there were a entertainiment set with more rock'n'roll sung by Jon Paris, drum solo by Bobby Torello, John & Jon change his guitar (John o bass and Jon on guitar) and a "trick" of Johnny standing behind Jon and reaching thru Jon's arms and playing the guitar while Jon reaching backwards and playing the bass.

On this torrent, it's a WPLR-FM broadcast and to my surprise barely circulated, the taper caught only the first 90 minutes, ending with the DJ saying Johnny will return for encores with a crowd ovation on the background. Maybe someone taped the whole set? I've had a request on this show to upload but I'm also hopeful that the encores and it'll show up here on DIME. Enjoy this excellent performance with the only and one renditions of "please love me" (no other recording with this one) and "Carol" (two other known versions have problems: on February 24, 1979 is cut and on July 2, 1979 is fake - look at my site).

Set List:

CD1 (about 77 minutes)
1. hideaway
2. diving duck
3. Elmore James medley [Johnny quotes many EJ songs]
4. c'mon in my kitchen
5. rollin' & tumblin'
6. Carol

CD2 (about 14 minutes)
1. please love me
2. back at the chicken shack

source: excellent FM recording. On the few circulating versions of this recording, "Carol" is cut. Here it's complete, uncut. MP3 samplers will be provided.

It's another recording from a Jeff James' (roryglzep, many thanks to him) original cassete tape (unknown generation) and the first ever transcription I've done from his tapes, about 8 years ago. As always, I've used my Sansui Deck D-95M, Creative Live! 24 bits sound card and Cool Edit Pro software to transfer the analog sound to digital format.

Please be patient, my bandwidth is very limited. Another JW torrent upon requests from my list. Audio ONLY please, no DVDs for while. If you've just come aboard the boat, other JW torrents, firstly uploaded by myself, still being seeded:
