· First version of “the geek rap” introducing Ballad Of A Thin Man. The word geek is slang for
- a person regarded as foolish, inept, or clumsy.
- a person who is single-minded or accomplished in scientific or technical pursuits but is felt to be socially inept.
- a carnival performer whose show consists of bizarre acts, such as biting the head off a live chicken.

Thank you. This is a love ballad I wrote a few years back. I didn't want to write it but I had to. (before Tangled Up In Blue)
In the Midwest in the fifties, during the fifties in the Midwest, they used to have these carnivals go by. And there always used to be someone in the carnival called a geek. A geek is a man who bit the head off a chicken and ate it, live. Anyway, everybody used to think of him as a freak. I mean if you think you’re funky, this guy was low-down all the way. And he used to think about other people as being freaks. I just wanted to tell you that. (before Ballad Of A Thin Man)
This song that you’re all about to hear now is (....) I used to do it at Newport Folk Festival 1963. Booed me out of town and put me on a train. Anyway, it's about a family, working for a family, on a day job. My first and last time I ever had a day job. And it's called I ain't Gonna Work On Maggie's Farm No More.
Thank you. I was on a train ride one time. Escaping from Mexico. Anyway I wrote this song on the train. I can't tell you what it's about, I just know I wrote it. (before Señor (Tales Of Yankee Power))
Thank you. I once went to the South of France on my birthday to a festival of gypsies down there. They had come from all over the world. Anyway, I got mixed up with someone and wrote this song. (before One More Cup Of Coffee (Valley Below))
This is a song about a girl who left me to be a movie star. (before Girl From The North Country)
Thank you. Ladies and gentlemen, on the drums tonight, give him a warm hand, from Kingston, Jamaica, Ian Wallace. On the bass guitar, Jerry Scheff. Thank you. On the keyboards, the one and only Alan Pasqua. On the lead guitar, the oldest member of this group. The young man born in 1921, Clearwater, Florida ladies and gentlemen, mad Billy Cross. All right, the youngest member of this group, fifteen years old, young David Mansfield. Been with me five years now. An on rhythm guitar, Steven Soles. I wanna tell you about this young man, who is playing the saxophone tonight. He used to play on all those Phil Spector records and you know he's good. You know he's great. Ladies and gentlemen, the phenomenal Steve Douglas. On the backup vocals tonight, my three favourite girls. I can't go anywhere without them. Anyway, on the left, my ex-girlfriend, Jo Ann Harris. She's Billy Cross' girlfriend now. Anyway, in the middle, my current girlfriend, Helena Springs. And, on the other side, my fiancée, Carolyn Dennis. All right, on the conga drums, from Detroit, the most amazing Miss Bobbye Hall. (before It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding))
Thank you. I wish we could stay here and play all night. I wish we could play all week. In fact I wish we could play all the time! You’re a really understanding crowd, you know you are! Anyway I'm gonna leave you with this song. We had a great time I hope we played something right for ya. (before Forever Young)
