Highlighting songs from her self-titled album and her smash debut Tuesday Night Music Club, two-time-grammy-winner Sheryl Crow delivered a powerful hour-long performance on Austin City Limits in Season 22.
"Songwriting is funny, because it's like keeping a diary, really, because you can go back and see where you've grown, what you've been through," she said. "It's sort of like checking a journal entry somewhere. There are things that are hard for me to listen to now and things that I still think really apply."
Crow pursues her music with an admirable independent streak that surfaces in infectious, inventive rhythms and honest, open lyrics. She launched her Austin City Limits showcase with the funky, upbeat "Every Day Is a Winding Road." Shawn Colvin made a special guest appearance on "Hard to Make A Stand," full of classic Stones riffs that purvey a delectable groove.
Crow credits blues and country music for a lot of her musical style and tastes.
"I grew up in southern Missouri, so my music that I listened to came out of the Mississippi Delta, and when corporate rock came into fashion while I was in high school -- bands like Journey, Boston, Foreigner, Kansas -- I went back and sort of dug into the blues.
"I think my music mostly stems from that real Americana, that back-roads feeling. There's a lot of a sort of country influence thing in there, by way of the Rolling Stones albums like Exile on Main Street and Let It Bleed, as well as Bob Dylan's Nashville Skyline," she explained.
"I think bands that were influenced by country were the bands I gravitated to, like The Band, for instance. I think that's kind of where my music mainly stems from. I love Gram Parsons. I love Emmylou [Harris]. Actually I gravitated to like true country, like Hank Williams [Sr.] and George Jones, stuff like that."
