Barabajagal found Donovan making a tentative move from folkie psychedelia into acid rock, drafting the Jeff Beck Group for instant credibility. Though Beck appeared on only two tracks, Donovan actually worked very well fronting a rock band, getting into a vicious groove on the title track. Elsewhere, things were much the same, paced by a yearning end-of-summer tale ("Where Is She"), an innocent, child-like round ("Happiness Runs"), and the downright dippy "I Love My Shirt." Also included was "To Susan on the West Coast Waiting," Donovan's first direct protest song in several years ("From Andy in Vietnam fighting / To Susan on the West Coast waiting"). The song was recorded in Los Angeles, along with the extended jam "Atlantis," a sub-aquatic fairy tale reminiscent of "Hey Jude." Barabajagal hangs together better than most Donovan LPs; it has more of a consistent sound than earlier LPs, and the songs are among his best.
