Notes

A classic example of Rhino Records' early strength in excellent, straightforward single-artist reissues, the Box Tops' Greatest Hits is genuinely as much Box Tops as all but the most ardent (pun intended) fan will require. All of the Memphis group's singles are included, from the hits "The Letter" and "Cry Like a Baby" to lesser-selling but equally beloved blue-eyed soul gems like "Soul Deep" and "Neon Rainbow." The compilers also include a nice cross-section of B-sides and album tracks, like the gospel-tinged shouter "I Met Her in Church" and a weird but wonderful psych-soul nugget with a New Orleans-style second-line rhythm (complete with tuba) called "Sweet Cream Ladies Forward March." Other rarities include "The Happy Song," one of the few Box Tops tracks penned by lead singer Alex Chilton, and "Mi Sento Felice," which is "Cry Like a Baby" in extraordinarily poor phonetic Italian.
