All Things Must Pass
1970
Toshiba Red vinyl (AP-9016C)
24-bit audio for DVD-A/DVD-V
This is the second of four parts of a comparison project for "All Things Must Pass".
As a number of folks may know, I shared a transfer I did of the Toshiba/Japan red vinyl pressing of
"All Things Must Pass" back in 2007-2008. Since that time I've made changes to some of the hardware
and software that I use with my projects. After making these changes there were requests for me
to go back and revisit the Toshiba red wax pressing.
This time around I decided to make things a little more interesting by doing a multi-pressing
comparison project. In reading about "All Things Must Pass" on the Hoffman forum one can't help but
run into various opinions about which particular pressing of ATMP is considered "the best". I found
that the UK first pressing was mentioned a number of times, as was the German pressing.
We can now compare, contrast, and decide for ourselves just what differences may exist between
these pressings, at least based upon how they are presented via my own modest system.
This Toshiba red vinyl pressing is part two of this project.
This LP contains the following tracks:
1. I’d Have You Anytime
2. My Sweet Lord
3. Wah-Wah
4. Isn’t It A Pity (version 1)
5. What Is Life
6. If Not For You
7. Behind That Locked Door
8. Let It Down
9. Run Of The Mill
10. Beware Of Darkness
11. Apple Scruffs
12. Ballad Of Sir Frankie Crisp (Let It Roll)
13. Awaiting On You All
14. All Things Must Pass
15. I Dig Love
16. Art Of Dying
17. Isn’t It A Pity (version 2)
18. Hear Me Lord
19. Out Of The Blue
20. It’s Johnny’s Birthday
21. Plug Me In
22. I Remember Jeep
23. Thanks For The Pepperoni
BONUS TRACKS:
24. If Not For You (from a Brazilian mono pressing)
25. Apple Scruffs (from a Brazilian mono pressing)
Though I don’t consider the bonus tracks as part of the comparison project, I feel
the Brazilian mono LP is a pressing of interest. I also feel that the mastering
details within the Brazilian LP leaves something to be desired but it's worth
sharing with those who have been curious about the mono LP. I've also included
other mono tracks from the LP with the UK and German pressings.
For those who are interested in such things, this comparison project should give
the listener a common, consistent point from which to assess and compare the differences
in these pressings.
The setup used:
-Technics SL-1900 direct drive turntable running an Ortofon 2M Black cartridge
-JVC AX-R97 integrated amp
-E-MU 1212M sound card
The audio was captured at 192/32-bit (float)
All pops & clicks were removed manually in Audition. No EQ or NR has been added.
Sample rate conversion to 96kHz & 44.1khz and down-converting to 16-bit audio
was accomplished via iZotope RX Advanced.
Artwork is included for those who care for it.
Good luck.
