Odds & sods is a typically end-of-an-era album. It resembles various outtakes from the period 1968-1972 and one previously released track. Not a very cohorent album to say the least but it has quite a few jewels that justify its release. A few stinkers too, and not necessarily the ones the Pete pointed out in his original linernotes.
The WG Polydor 11-track CD from the eighties had the album in its original sequence/mix but has been treated heavily with noise reduction, which takes all air out of the recording. This CD is probably the worst sounding O&S ever (although whitefang says 'It sounds great'). The original 11-track MCA was better, but still not quite what it could have been. The 23-track Jon Astley supervised reissue offers quite a few interesting xtra's and is essential in its own right. But the tracks have been remixed which in combination with the different sequence makes it an entirely different album. And more unfortunately, the maxed-out mastering ruins the whole damn thing (once again).
TML in the deadwax indicates it was mastered at The Mastering Lab by a well respected engineer named Doug Sax (he also did an excellent cutting of Who's next and By Numbers). More importantly, it has been confirmed that Sax worked with the mastertapes of "Who's Next" during the original US cutting of that album which means that this was probably the case with this LP as well.
