Three Dog Night Live At The Roanoke Civic Center, Roanoke WV 1971-05-28 master AUD, rejoined and EQ'd (first time in circulation, complete concert)

Here are some recollections from MDT about the show:
I did not attend the concert, unfortunately. My (14 year old) sister's high school graduating class went together. They first went to Lakeside Amusement Park which was nearby in Salem, VA. Then they went to the concert at Roanoke Civic Center. Afterwards, she gave me the tapes and I've had them ever since.
She used my little cassette recorder which I'd received a Christmas or two earlier. It was the first cassette recorder I ever saw, actually. It was a small recorder about six inches wide and a foot long. 3 or 4 inches thick. Black leather covering. It had a twist knob rather than push buttons. Turn to the left to rewind, etc. To record, it had a separate button to push in a hold while you twisted the main knob. I can't remember the brand name, but I had it for ages. It had a separate hand-held microphone with an on/off button that stopped the motor. I suspect I likely still have the mic around here somewhere! Wow, I don't remember what became of the recorder.

The two tapes from this show were recorded on cheap Juliette tapes, which hadn't weathered the years well. The first tape's leader had broken and it was received with a split, taped-together housing. The second tape's pressure pad was no longer functioning properly and the concert had an erratic sound.
The first tape was transferred into a First Sounds Natal Listening housing (uh-huh...yup). The second tape was broken apart and put into a TDK D-90 housing. It lasted for exactly one run-through and the leader broke on it as well.
The sound quality of this recording is very well mixed, and all the instruments and vocals are audible. But, the sound is also large, boomy and somewhat distorted at times. After listening to the Joe Maloney recording of this band from the same time period, I've come to the conclusion that at least part of that came from the band's overwhelmed sound system. I would rate this recording as fair to good, with some VG moments. Please listen to the sample before downloading.
Many EQ passes were required in order to bring the most out of the sound quality: three for hum removal, and two for EQ. The hum was at odd frequencies and not present all the time, leading me to believe the microphone might have been too close to the recorder at times. The result is a bit bright, but much clearer than before. Most microphone bumps were removed, but instances where the oxide wore off the tape were not. Attempts at compressing the time by deleting worn passages resulted in a skippy recording, so it was felt leaving it alone produced better results.
