Comments:
1 - HELP!! If you have any uncirculated SPIRIT shows, or better quality FM
broadcasts than what's been posted here before, please share them. If you
know anybody who has shows that fit this category that aren't on DIME, please
dub off their stuff and share it. I'm trying to write a book on SPIRIT and need
all the information I can get. I have a database of over 1500 gigs 1967-1996, and
want to find as much information as I can to add to it. If you have any memories
of where you saw SPIRIT, the more specific the better (venue, city, date, supporting
bands, etc.), I'd love to know that as well. Please leave that in the comments
section or PM me. Thank you!
2 - Show description & comments follow:
Anybody who has seen a show at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago knows that the
place is an acoustic nightmare, at least for rock. Maybe in the big band era things
sounded better? This recording suffers for that reason.
This is SPIRIT headlining a four band billing including ANGEL, THE RUNAWAYS, and
James Cotton. THE RUNAWAYS were no shows due to tonsillitis issues. My friend
remembers that James Cotton was booed off the stage after a few numbers (sacrilege!),
and that ANGEL sucked. However, SPIRIT really goes down well with the audience on
this one. This is a rare performance from the short lived FARTHER ALONG tour. Excluding
a few earlier local West Coast dates, the tour began July 21, 1976 in Tucson, and ended
on August 28, 1976 at the "Civic Center" in Santa Monica, CA, when John Locke quit after
the Neil Young incident. Please see Torrent # 308058 for a copy of this infamous show.
The band continued as a trio (California/Cassidy/Turlep), and all the FARTHER ALONG
material slowly disappeared from the set list.
Most of the gigs during this tour were at large clubs. There was a FM radio broadcast on
KLOL-FM in Houston on July 30, 1976, but only a poor quality fragment has ever surfaced.
Has anybody got this? Does anybody have a recollection of seeing them at "Bogarts" in
Cincinnati with THE RUNAWAYS? There's also a possibility of the "Stone Balloon" in Newark,
DE. If anybody has any further info, please PM me or post it in the comments section. Hope
you enjoy the show!
