Total Time ::: 42:02
::: Wins-no-awards shrill transistor radio sound (not unlike Source Tape 1). Check samples for fear factor alleviation, love it or leave it judgements, or classic Band "chills up the spine" fragments.
::: Warts ::: Some weird background noise thruout (tape machine motor?). Occasional microphone bumps (especially 1st song!) & wind noise, some talking near taper, some volume variation from mike movement & wind, some definitely non-repairable glitches that sound like bumps but may be tape machine issues. At one point in "I Shall Be Released" it sounds like someone moved some cooking pots & then Ed(?) & Bill have a conversation...
::: NOT the same recording as previous master tape Source #1 on DIME (or the DAVMAR version of that one).
::: Almost 5 minutes longer than other source with beginning of "We Can Talk" & stage announcements.
::: Source/Taper #1 is tinnier but steadier than this recording. This one seems to have more bass but has some bothersome buzz type sound.
Recording Information ::: mono dictaphone cassette recorder, unknown external microphone -> master mono normal bias audience cassette -> 1st generation Maxell XLII-90 cassette, Dolby B on (1980s transfer).
Playback 2011-11-xx ::: 1st generation Maxell XLII-90 cassette on Nakamichi BX-300 cassette deck, Dolby B on, azimuth & speed adjusted (pitched!) for individual recording, heads cleaned & demagnetized -> Tascam CD-RW900SL professional CD recorder -> CD-RW, no track splits -> computer -> EAC secure mode (logs made) -> wav file(s) -> Audacity (normalisation to remove DC offset, channel/phase alignment, fades, manual one-at-a-time glitch / dropout / bump / pop / click / dullspot repairs, volume adjustments, further speed fixes if necessary, NO equalisation) -> CD Wave (track splits) -> Trader's Little Helper -> yer ears. First uploaded week of 2013-03-15. (This runs at a different speed than Source #1. I won't claim perfection, so one or the other is slightly off-speed.).
Line-up ::: Rick Danko - electric bass, vocals // Levon Helm - drums, vocals, mandolin // Garth Hudson - keyboards // Richard Manuel - piano, vocals // Robbie Robertson - electric guitar, vocals.
Nothing here ever commercially released to my knowledge. If I'm wrong, please advise & I'll take the offending trax offline.
CoolSonics 224 ::: Thanks to the original taper & trader, The Man In The Palace! Long may his empire stand. ::: Corrections welcome ::: This is vintage of The Band that turned me on. One of my first 2 commercial cassettes, given to me by my parents with my first cassette deck, was the 2nd album by The Band. To say I wore it out is an understatement. It was like breathing everyday - completely essential. I don't know that this recording will be any kind of revelation for anyone, but it seems to be much less common than Source #1 & very likely upgrades the copies that do circulate from this source. Enjoy!
Kudos to Zongo for life support, Lochner for mikes&more & Fast Freddie for runnin' Video Dick's Record Emporium with the bathroom office full of tape decks. Thanks to Hanwaker (few among us can keep his pace). Mountains of gratitude to Davmar, D.White, Sanchez, Elliot, The Florida Kid, Kloiber, Zingg, JTW, Bershaw, Boston Gold, Dixon, Moore, Gough & SO many more for all that collecting & sharing... Royal thanks to The Man In The Palace, Doc Tinker, Brinkhoffs, Barely Eatin', Reel Master Gaule, Parrish & all the traders who housed me thru my music acquisition & travel years. Hats off to Brother Kent, Uncle Jake, Little Queenie (& her neighbor Frank) & his honor Ptomaine Thomas. Glasses raised to Byron for musical horizon expansion & much obliged to J & Thurston for keepin' my concert fires burnin' since my continental shift. Thanks to the Mods for keepin' DIME alive. Enjoy, share, give, spread peace. Yers truly, Knees
