01-15-1937 - 11-14-1939
This very interesting collector's CD features altoist/singer Louis Jordan at the beginning of his career, tracing his progress until right before he hit it big. Jordan is heard in 1937 taking three almost unrecognizable ballad vocals with Chick Webb's Orchestra, backing singer Rodney Sturgis on three tunes, performing two selections from late 1938 with his Elks Rendez-Vous Band (including a hot instrumental, "Honey In the Bee Ball") and jamming a dozen numbers from his two sessions in 1939 with his recently formed Tympany Five. Of the latter, highlights include "Flat Face," "At the Swing Cat's Ball" and "Honeysuckle Rose." Louis Jordan fans will really want this British CD if they do not already have the Classics release 1934-1940.
