Originally compiled and issued in 1975 as a vinyl album in the original Chess Blues Masters Series, this 19-tracker is some of Wolf's best middle-period (1959-1963) material. Surprisingly, many of the tracks were cut in stereo and their appearance on compact disc does much to enhance their sonic ambience. Although some of this material surfaces on the three-disc Howlin' Wolf box set ("I Ain't Superstitious," "Just Like I Treat You"), this single disc stands mightily on its own. If you really want to hear Hubert Sumlin rip up the fretboard, this an excellent place to start.
