1968-08-24 Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Wedgewood Amusement Park Early Show (M?-AUD *DimeTravel remaster*)
>>> VERY FINE up-close(!) stereo audience tape <<<
longliverock "Cry Blue Murder" speed-fix NOW carefully remastered fixing MANY(!) issues & lightly EQ'd *~*
01. --tuning up--
02. Substitute ->
03. I Can't Explain
04. Boris The Spider
05. A Quick One, While He's Away
06. Magic Bus ->
07. Shakin' All Over
Total Time ::: 28:48
::: VERY fine resuscitated stereo AUD. Check samples for hoodwink potential or thumb-twiddlin' momentary jolts o' joy.
::: Warts: 12 seconds into #1 taper adjusted volume or mikes. #3 has tape glitch with missing 1/2 second & 20+ seconds of recovery warble/quality variance. Fixed or lessened most every dullspot, dropout or electric pop found but surely missed some & many couldn't be helped. There are a few shifts in quality - taper redirecting a mike & some possibly tape aging issues but don't dispair, they're not really an issue!
CONTRAST CLAUSE: This version is a remastered & EQ'd version of http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=486203
COMPARISON CLAUSE: Also commonly circulating: the original "Cry Blue Murder" disc & the slightly altered speed-corrected longliverock upload.
::: Original cover & poster NOT included in this upload as they could be construed as proprietary, sorry.
::: The Who played 2 days/3 shows. 1968-08-23 Friday 8:15pm & 1968-08-24 Saturday 3:15pm (this recording) & 8:15pm.
::: The Noblemen (from Oklahoma City) opened all 3 shows. (NOT the UK 60s band featuring Martin Barre nor Fort Lauderdale band with same name).
::: Presumed incomplete set, likely at least missing the standard "My Generation" set closer.
::: The Wedgewood Amusement Park was located at 4500 Northwest Expressway.
::: The Who played outside on top of the main building facing the 'Tornado' (a huge white roller coaster).
::: This upload does NOT include the Dallas 1967 Who material from the "Cry Blue Murder" disc.
::: Some claim this may be 1967-03-19or29 but longliverock uploader noted it's quite improbable as "Magic Bus" wasn't yet released or being performed yet.
Recording Information ::: unknown stereo recording equipment -> master narrow stereo audience tape -> ? -> "Cry Blue Murder" silver boot disc -> longliverock uploader remaster with no sound adjustments or eq except slow speed/pitch corrected by one whole semitone (exactly) in Soundforge from 30’30” to 28’48”, amplified low left channel & worked on volume issues around glitch in #3. -> flacs (from old Long Live Rock site) -> wavs (DIMER craymcla did new track splits, fixed SBE's & tagged in Soundforge) -> flacs (level 8) -> DIME.
Playback 2014-03-xx ::: flacs (TLH) -> wavs -> Audacity [normalisation to remove DC offset, channel/phase alignment, fades, manual one-at-a-time glitch, bump, pop, click, dropout & dullspot repairs, volume adjustments, light equalisation to increase high end & boost bass, mega-hours of electric pop removal] -> CD Wave (track splits) -> flacs (Trader's Little Helper) -> yr ears. First uploaded week of 2014-04-05.
Further DimeTravel remastering notes ::: Channels were SEVERELY offset & varied constantly so corrections applied every 15 seconds thru entire recording (& it still wanders in places!). Channel signals are quite different due to stereo mikes, close-up position and/or possible tapedeck head issues during recording or playback (or previous EQ applied), but not a problem tho' it contributes to offset issues. Perhaps a 1000 audible lite electric pops now completely repaired but there are surely more - a tape transfer or deck issue. 100s of dullspots & dropouts repaired or lessened. Various volume issues repaired. Light EQ applied but tried hard not to introduce any new problems, only help. As noted by a previous uploader, Pete's guitar is a bit low until somewhere in #3, presumably due to mike placement. To be honest, this was a recording that, well into the remastering process, I wished I hadn't started, as just when I was thought I was thru, after crazy hours of work, I realised that without headphones I could hear hundreds more small electric pops, so, in order to do it correctly, I had to go back thru the entire recording in slow speed & take them out one by one - agonising work. But the results are most excellent.
Line-up ::: Roger Harry Daltrey, CBE - vocals // Peter Dennis Blandford "Pete" Townshend (aka "Bijou Drains") - electric guitar // John Alec "The Ox" Entwistle (aka "Thunderfingers") - electric bass // Keith John Moon (aka "Moon The Loon") - drums & general insanity.
Nothing here ever commercially released to my knowledge. If I'm wrong, please advise & I'll take the offending trax offline.
DimeTravel 015 ::: Thanks to the original taper & to the longliverock uploader for freeing the beast & to DIMER craymcla for puttin' it these quarters. ::: Corrections welcome ::: This one goes out to Mr Sanchez, who's been carrying the The Who torch for many a year. :::
Original longliverock uploader notes paraphrased & abridged ::: Probably the best sounding audience recording from the summer 1968 tour! According to "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere" & the original concert poster, The Who played 2 shows that day. Definitely the early show as Pete comments on the sun bearing down on their necks & shining in audience’s eyes & by 9PM when they went on for the late show, the sun had set in that latitude. Doubtful it's the complete show (less than 30 minutes & only 6 songs) & they usually ended their sets with “My Generation” (with "Magic Bus" & "Shakin’ All Over" often played right before it) so likely the 30-minute tape side ran out.
DimeTravel Notes ::: I got this thanks to DIMER craymcla in the past 2 weeks & was immediately struck by 2 things, one, the music sounded excellent, and two, it sounded like the tape had some serious issues that could be easily corrected - not so easy as it turned out, more than 20 hours of work as I write these notes, but the recording sounds far better! Would that all our audience tapes of this vintage were of this calibre. I enjoyed checking the longliverock uploader's sun-goin'-down theory, because of course, on the net, you can check about anything. Just head on over to www.timeanddate.com, plug in Oklahoma, be advised it can vary 10 minutes either way from one side of the state to another, put in all your info, ie 1968-08-24 & find 8:08PM as yr average. And so, you will see, the sun was tipping over the horizon right about the time The Noblemen were scheduled to open the late show, which certainly would make this the early one.
I would say this is no longer 'probably' the best audience recording of the band of this vintage - until somethin' else comes along to top it, it seems an absolute certainty. Let The Who Sock It To Ya - in real style. Listen, enjoy, show appreciation, share, give, spread peace. Yers truly, Knees
P.S. Just out of curiousity, it is extremely unlikely this taper only recorded this show. Where are the other tapes from Oklahoma City in the late 60s, early 70s. This is certainly a rarity in more way than one.
