2nd gen
"Seattle'70 discs were obtained from a branch on the Carnival Dogs tree (Dec 2000) of a 2nd gen source. Extracted the source discs (obtained Dec. 2002) to hard drive with EAC in "secure" mode. Added cuelist markers in CoolEdit. Deglitched, dehissed with RayGun, no speed correction necessary.
Checked speed by doing spectrum analysis of 1st, 3rd & 5th notes of WTMO. Harmonics were obtained at the expected frequencies (165, 331, 496, 665 Hz). Also checked last "da-nun" before vocals begin in FTO. Expected harmonics at 54, 99, 148, 198, 252 and 292 were obtained. No speed correction is necessary.
Saved deglitched version, then processed thru RayGun to dehiss (threshold 0dB, attn 9dB).
Constructed a cuesheet to automatically load the single large WAV file into CDWave and to split it up into separate tracks with appropriate names. The individual WAV files were converted to SHN (mkwACT) and vtheir checksums verified.
To double-check that CDWave actually was separating the tracks on sector boundaries and that my burning and extraction process was flawless, the following test was performed:
1) the individual SHN files were converted back to WAV files.
2) a CDRWin cuecheet was constructed to burn a cd from the individual WAV files and a cd was burned for both discs 1 and 2.
3) EAC was used to extract the audio from each of the two discs burn in (2).
4) The EAC "Compare" tool was used to compare the EAC-extractred WAV file to the original huge WAV file.
5) Both discs compare exactly, except for 660 extra samples at the beginning and a couple of msec at the end of the discs. These extra samples result from my lack of proper offset correction. Since there is 0.5-1.0 secs of silence at the beginning and end of each disc, worrying about these extra samples is not an issue.
6) Based on these tests, I conclude that CDWave splits up WAV files on sector boundaries (otherwise extra samples would have been added between some tracks and created miscompares). I can also conclude that my burning and EAC extractions worked flawlessly.
There's a few anomalies that would be nice to get an explanation from whomever has the source cassettes that were used to originally master this set of discs:
1) At the end of RB, Jim says something like "Owww", and then there is an obvious tape cut.
2) During WTMO it sounds very much like there is a tape cut just at the beginning just after Jim screams and Robby rips his feedback. There is lower background hiss level for about one minute. It returns to a normal louder hiss level just before Jim sings "Oh, yeah" (instead of the usual "yeah, here").
3) At the end of WTMO, when Jim says "Thank you for your patience" the background hiss level increases and stays high for about 4 minutes. It goes back to normal just after Jim asks "hey, does anybody got a cigarette out there?"
4) The entire "Petition the Lord" track has a higher hiss level than the rest of the recording.
These changes in background hiss just look rather suspicious and make me wonder whether this version of Seattle'70 came from a single tape source. Let's hope the masters are complete and uncut until the tape ran out during LMF. Their release from BMR should be a nice upgrade." Isa

A low gen recording, which is to my ear is the most clear and separate sounding of all. As fillers only this two were featured on the boot 'Roundhouse Blues'. But luckily the most important ones from the show. –Buda
